Statement by one of the protesters at the Memorial to the Sinti and Roma Victims of National Socialism (auf deutsch weiter unten)
We, Sinti and Roma, did not come here to hide away. We came here in respect and in recognition of our people. 90% of our population in Europe were murdered when national socialist persecutions and expulsions were perpetrated during Second World War. More than half a million people atrociously slaughtered. We are here in protest against the mass deportations or Sinti and Roma from Germany to Eastern Europe being executed by force right now!
I don’t want to overinterpret this Memorial to the Sinti and Roma Victims of National Socialism; maybe it stands exclusively for those people, our people, who got murdered. But we are here and to us it is one of the most sacred places for all Roma people around the world, since up till now it is the only memorial we got from the german state in recognition of the persecution and murder of our people.
We’re glad if many german citizens share in solidarity our opinion, that it’s the people who have to stand up for basic human rights and we’re hoping to get their support!
All Sinti and Roma people around the world have to fight for their rights as we are doing here! Because we are all humans, there’s no difference in this between our people and others. And that’s precisely what we’re struggling for here in Germany united with the Germans by our most severe common history.
It is about time for germans to acknowledge, that since 1472 when we first appeared in Munich, we’re living here in Germany and still are being discriminated in our rights here. Still we are the scapegoats of all nations, still we happen to be stateless subjects, aliens to all people. This needs to be changed at last! We want to live in peace, we want to associate freely as human beings; we want a better future for our children; education for our children, which we cannot grant them as displaced persons running from town to town; like this they cannot come to rest and attend school.
That’s why it’s all too natural if many of the Roma people here don’t know their history well, because many of them don’t know how to write and read. But if politicians, like a minister of migration and integration states, that there’s not enough information available on the Roma people, that’s entirely wrought! Such persons have all the necessary education, they know how to write and read! Some searching on the internet will do to grasp the bottom line. And honestly, Roma people themselfs had to rely much on outside information to learn their history, since it were other people, not them, who did the writing and had access to universities.
We demand Germany to live up to it’s historic responsability based on the deprivation and murder of our people. We have been promised in the 1950s to be acknowledged here as Sinti and Roma, they pledged to acknowledge our rights, respect our right to stay and let us live our lives here, as they had promised to the jewish people. Regarding the jewish people they kept their word, not with us though. 70 years have passed ever since and we feel betrayed once again! We had been promised a normal live with just the same rights as german citizens have, to be able to establish ourselves and stay. The right to work and life in dignity.
And still we haven’t seen it but instead our people are being deported on a massive scale, are being expelled from Germany. People are being threatened to leave Germany and they call it ‘encouragement to voluntary departure’. Who doesn’t obey is being deported by force, in the early morning hours, deported to so called ‘save third countries’, yet there are no save countries for Roma people on the Balcans!
We demand the right to stay for all Sinti and Roma werever they are!

Statement von einem Protestierenden am Denkmal für die im Nationalsozialismus ermordeten Sinti und Roma Europas
Wir, Sinti und Roma, sind nicht hierher gekommen um uns zu verstecken. Wir sind hierher gekommen aus Respekt und aus Anerkennung unseres Volkes, von dem 90% in Europa ermordet wurde während der nationalsozialistischen Verfolgung und Vertreibung der Sinti und Roma im zweiten Weltkrieg. Über eine halbe Million Menschen wurden auf bestialische Art und Weise ermordet. Wir sind hier um zu Protestieren gegen die massenhaften Abschiebungen von Sinti und Roma aus Deutschland nach Osteuropa, die jetzt mit Gewalt durchgesetzt werden!
Ich will dieses Denkmal für die im Nationalsozialismus ermordeten Sinti und Roma nicht allzu sehr interpretieren, möglicherweise steht es ausschließlich für diese Menschen, die Ermordeten. Aber wir sind hier und für uns ist das einer der heiligsten Orte für alle Roma auf der ganzen Welt. Denn es ist das einzige Denkmal, das wir bis jetzt von Deutschland bekommen haben für die Verfolgungen und den Mord an unserem Volk.
Wir freuen uns, wenn viele Bürger Deutschlands solidarisch mit uns derselben Meinung sind, dass die Menschenrechte vertreten werden sollten durch das Volk und wünschen uns, dass sie uns unterstützen!
Alle Sinti und Roma auf der Welt sollen für ihre Rechte kämpfen, so wie wir hier! Weil wir alle Menschen sind, es gibt da keinen Unterschied zwischen anderen Völkern uns unserem. Dafür kämpfen wir gerade hier in Deutschland, wo uns eine so schwerwiegende Geschichte mit dem deutschen Volk verbindet.
Es ist an der Zeit, dass die Deutschen einmal anerkennen, dass wir seit 1472, als wir in München zum ersten Mal auftauchten, in Deutschland leben und noch immer in unseren Rechten hier diskriminiert werden. Noch immer sind wir die Prügelknaben der Nationen und staatenlose Menschen; wir sind überall Ausländer. Das soll sich endlich einmal ändern! Wir wollen unsere Ruhe haben; wir wollen uns assoziieren als Menschen; wir wollen eine bessere Zukunft für unsere Kinder; einen Bildungsweg für unsere Kinder, denn als Vertriebene, von Stadt zu Stadt, können wir unseren Kindern keine Zukunft bieten; sie können nicht zur Ruhe kommen und eine Schule besuchen.
Deswegen, wenn von all diesen Roma-Menschen hier viele nichts von der Geschichte ihres Volkes verstehen, dann ist das 100% glaubwürdig, weil von all diesen Menschen hier mehr als 95% nicht lesen und schreiben können. Aber wenn ein Politiker, etwa ein Minister für Migration und Integration, sagt, ‘wir wissen zu wenig über die Roma’, dann ist das nicht zu verstehen! Solche Menschen sind gebildet, sie können lesen und schreiben! Man muß ja nur ein bisschen googlen und schon weiß man das Wichtigste. Und ehrlich gesagt, die Roma haben selber viel über ihre Kultur von außen gelernt, denn es waren die anderen, die geschrieben haben und an den Universitäten waren.
Unsere Forderung ist, dass Deutschland seine historische Verantwortung aufgrund der schrecklichen Entrechtung und Ermordung unseres Volks einlöst. Sie haben uns in den 50er Jahren versprochen, dass wir hier als Sinti und Roma anerkannt würden, versprachen uns unsere Rechte zu geben, uns Bleiberecht und eine Lebensperspektive zu geben, so wie den Jüdinnen und Juden. Den Jüdinnen und Juden wurde das ermöglicht, uns aber noch nicht. Es ist jetzt 70 Jahre her, dass dieses Versprechen gegeben wurde und das heißt, wir sind wieder angelogen worden! Es hieß wir könnten hier leben wie die Bürgerinnen und Bürger Deutschlands, mit allen Rechten, wir könnten uns hier etablieren, bekämen Bleiberecht und eine Arbeits- und Lebensperspektive, könnten hier ein menschenwürdiges Leben führen.
Und das ist noch immer nicht geschehen, stattdessen werden die Menschen massiv abgeschoben, aus Deutschland vertrieben. Die Menschen werden bedroht damit sie aus Deutschland weggehen und sie nennen es ‘Ermutigung zur freiwilligen Ausreise’. Wer nicht gehorcht wird mit Gewalt abgeschoben, in den frühen Morgenstunde abgeschoben und deportiert in sogenannte ‘sichere Drittstaaten’, wo doch für uns Roma kein Land sicher ist auf dem Balkan!
